Kikuyu Lawn Care
Kikuyu Lawn Care
Kikuyu is a warm-season grass species that is frequently used for lawns, parks, and sports fields in many parts of Australia. It is a native of East Africa, and because of how well it tolerates heat, drought, and wear, it has become increasingly popular. To keep Kikuyu turf in top condition and with a lush green appearance, it needs to be well maintained. This guide will include important advice and suitable product options for caring for Kikuyu turf, assisting you in achieving a healthy lawn.
Fertilising:
Kikuyu does not require much fertilising however maintaining the strength and colour of Kikuyu turf still requires fertilisation. In the spring, use a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage strong growth. Think about using a fertiliser like 2 Spec Elevate or 2 Spec Origin depending on the height of cut or density in spring and summer, then 2 Spec Endurance or 2 Spec Komplex in Autumn preparing your lawn for winter dormancy. Avoid using full application rates as it can cause thatch build which can result in Sponginess and future problems with nutrient and water penetration.
Weed Control:
To avoid weed competition and preserve the clean appearance of Kikuyu turf, weed management is required. Care needs to be used when considering herbicides for Kikuyu as many will harm it, please read labels carefully and use them sparingly, use of pre-emergence is recommended. Ideally hand removing weeds is preferred however not always possible, a well maintained Kikuyu lawn will out compete many weeds.
Watering:
Kikuyu turf requires routine watering even though it can withstand droughts well. Aim for around 25mm of irrigation/precipitation every week, and water deeply and infrequently. To minimise evaporation, encourage deeper roots and allow the grass to dry before dusk, which lowers the risk of diseases, it is best to water early in the morning.
Regular Mowing: Regular mowing is necessary to maintain the ideal height of Kikuyu turf. Mow the turf every 3 to 7 days throughout the active growing season, which is normally in the spring through to Autumn, less frequently in cooler weather. For a beautiful and healthy lawn, mow to a height of around 20 to 40 mm; lower mow heights of 10-20 mm can be attained with beautiful results with a more intensive maintenance plan.
Aeration:
Kikuyu turf will benefit substantially from aerating the soil when the soil become compacted. Core aeration increases airflow into the soil profile and root zone, it promotes water and nutrient penetration, and relieves soil compaction. This procedure also improves soil biology promoting stronger root growth and overall turf health.
